Hollingsworth LLP selects DC Greens as its September 2020 Community Engagement Partner.

news | September 3, 2020

In order to continue our commitment to addressing food security in the Washington, DC community, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Firm designates DC Greens as its September 2020 Community Engagement Partner. The Firm will donate to DC Greens and will match donations by all Firm employees made during the month of September.

DC Greens is a local non-profit organization that uses food education, food access, and food policy to advance food justice in the district.  Advancing food justice is to recognize and address the structural inequalities in our food system. The work of creating a just food system shifts power and knowledge to community members so that they can exercise their rights to grow, sell, and eat healthy food at all times.  DC Greens believes that healthy food is fresh, nutritious, affordable, and culturally appropriate.  It is grown and distributed with care for the well-being of people, animals, and the environment. Practicing food justice leads to an equitable local food system, self-reliant communities, and a healthy environment.

DC Greens offers support to local schools, working to put food education on the menu in every classroom and supporting teachers to fully integrate food education into the standard curriculum.  DC Greens also works to put environmentally sustainable food into school cafeterias, supporting city officials, and convening farm-to-school partners.  Through its Trellis Program, DC Greens has served teachers from over 100 schools in all eight wards in the District.  DC Greens also provides free support in the form of professional development workshops for teachers, farm-based educators, and school garden markets where students sell produce from their school gardens and local farms, creating healthy and sustainable fundraisers for their school garden programs.

During COVID-19, DC Greens has disbursed funds to eligible local farms and farmers markets to support targeted emergency fresh food access and has partnered with other DC organizations to provide free meal sites in the District.
